Lazio and Celtic are two historic football clubs with passionate fan bases that are both desperate to make a mark on European football.

SS Lazio, hailing from the historic city of Rome, are yet to clinch the ultimate prize of the UEFA Champions League. Their best performance came in the 1999/00 edition, when they reached the quarter-finals. Yet, Lazio have tasted some degree of success in European football.

The Italian club won the Cup Winners' Cup in the 1998/99 season, which was the last season of the competition before it was abolished. Lazio's UEFA Super Cup win in the same year added further glory to their resume. In the 2020/21 season, Lazio reached the Champions League knockout rounds for the first time in more than 20 years, but were thrashed 6-2 on aggregate by Bayern Munich.

Celtic FC, on the other hand, have reached the pinnacle of club football by winning the European Cup, now known as the UEFA Champions League, in the 1966/67 season. Their triumph over Inter Milan in the final remains the greatest day in the club’s history.

Despite their European glory, Celtic has faced challenges in keeping pace with Europe's elite in the 21st century, failing to progress beyond the Champions League group stages since the 2012/13 season.

Lazio vs Celtic Head to Head

In the 2023/24 edition of the Champions League, Lazio and Celtic were drawn together in Group E alongside Atletico Madrid and Feyenoord. They had never previously met in the competition.

Yet, Lazio and Celtic did meet in the 2019/20 Europa League group stage. In both Glasgow and Rome, Celtic trailed their Italian counterparts 1-0 at halftime. Despite that, Lazio managed to lose both games 2-1, conceding decisive goals in dramatic fashion — one in the 89th minute at Celtic Park and another in the 95th minute at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio vs Celtic Connections

Only a handful of players have had the opportunity to represent both of these prestigious clubs. One notable figure is the Italian football legend Paolo Di Canio, who kick-started his career with Lazio during the 1980s. In 1996, he embarked on a brief but impactful journey with Celtic, making 37 appearances and netting an impressive 15 goals during his single season in Scotland.

Another player who wore the shirts of both Lazio and Celtic was Dutch defender Edson Braafheid. Despite his participation in the 2010 World Cup final, Braafheid encountered challenges in securing a consistent role in club football outside of his native Holland.
