SS Lazio’s form in Europe has been patchy at best, though this is chiefly down to the lack of UEFA Champions League campaigns they’ve actually qualified for. The Rome-based club has won the Serie A title just twice, and on the first occasion they did so, in the mid-1970s, they were banned from competing in the European Cup the following season due to crowd trouble.
In the 1999/00 season, the Biancocelesti played in the Champions League for the first time and they did well to qualify through two group stages, before they came up against a strong Valencia outfit in the quarter-finals. Lazio would ultimately lose to the Spanish side, 5-3 on aggregate.
In each of their next five appearances in UEFA's premier club competition, Lazio failed to progress beyond the group phase before finally making it to the knockout phase again in 2020/21. On that occasion they lost to none other than Bayern Munich over two legs, 6-2 on aggregate.
Bayern are by far the strongest German team in the history of the European Cup/Champions League. Their first taste of success in the competition came in 1973/74, with a dominant 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the European Cup Final. The Bavarians successfully defended the title the following season, this time defeating Leeds United 2-0 at the Parc des Princes. Stars such as Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeness, and Gerd Müller all played key roles in helping Bayern secure a hat-trick of European Cups as they narrowly defeated Saint-Etienne in the 1975/76 final.
In 1982, the club lost the the European Cup final to Aston Villa in Rotterdam. A bigger shock awaited Bayern in 1987, when they somehow lost out to FC Porto despite being ahead with just 13 minutes left on the clock.
In 1999, Ottmar Hitzfeld, who had previously led Borussia Dortmund to Champions League glory just a few years earlier, steered Bayern Munich to the Champions League final at Camp Nou, where they met Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. Mario Basler gave the German outfit an early lead before the Red Devils remarkably netted twice after the 90th minute to snatch the title out of Bayern's grasp. The defeat was difficult to process for Bayern fans but the club secured redemption two years later by defeating Valencia on penalties in the UCL final.
Bayern lost the 2010 Champions League final to Inter Milan and again two years later against Chelsea. The latter was particularly painful as it took place at the Allianz Arena, Bayern's home stadium. Didier Drogba equalised in the closing minutes before also converting the winning spot-kick in the resulting penalty shootout.
In 2013, Bayern overcame Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund, 1-0, at Wembley Stadium. The Bavarians later claimed a sixth European Cup / Champions League crown when they defeated Paris Saint-Germain, also 1-0, in the 2019/20 final.
Bayern made light work of Lazio when the they met in the Round of 16 of the 2020/21 Champions League. The Bavarians triumphed 4-1 at the Stadio Olimpico before finishing the job with a 2-1 victory on home soil, with Robert Lewandowski on the scoresheet in both legs.
The teams reconvened in 2023/24, again at the last-16 stage. The Biancocelesti defeated Bayern by a single goal to nil in this fixture, as Ciro Immobile converted a penalty in the second half for Lazio to take an advantage into the return leg at the Allianz Arena.
A number of well-known individuals have represented both these clubs, namely former Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina and Germany hero Mirolsav Klose.
The latter spent four seasons at Bayern, scoring 53 goals in 150 games, before switching to Lazio in 2011. Klose remained influential during his time in the Italian capital, netting 63 times in 171 outings before he retired from the game in 2016. The World Cup winner secured silverware at both these clubs and he was certainly a fan favourite at Lazio though, arguably, at Bayern he didn’t quite achieve as much as he may have hoped.
