Lazio have proved something of a failure on the European stage, and that’s something the Biancocelesti will be looking to rectify this season.

The Rome-based side have won Serie A twice, up to 2023, and on the first occasion in 1973/74, they should then have gotten to taste European Cup action the following season, but they were unfortunately banned from doing so due to crowd trouble during a previous UEFA competition.

In 1999/2000, they finally made their maiden UEFA Champions League voyage, and in the first group stage that season, they won four and drew two of their six matches to ease into the second group phase.

Here, they were drawn with Chelsea, Marseille, and Feyenoord in a very tough group, but they did wonderfully well to win three games and drew two others to finish top of the pile to earn a place in the final eight.

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side then took on Valencia in the Quarter-Finals. Unfortunately, Lazio were thumped 5-2 in the first leg of the clash, and though Juan Sebastian Veron scored the only goal of a second-leg win at the Stadio Olimpico, it was not enough to turn over the deficit.

The only other time Lazio have made it to the knockout phase of the competition came in 2020/21 when they were easily outdone by Bayern Munich, the German side winning 6-2 in the Round of 16.

Liverpool, in marked contrast to their Italian opponents, have a rich history of success in the competition.

Iconic Anfield boss Bill Shankly secured the club’s first European trophy triumph when his Liverpool side won the UEFA Cup in 1972/73, but it was his successor, the great Bob Paisley, who won the Merseyside outfit’s first European Cup title.

That came in 1976/77 with Liverpool beating Borussia Monchengladbach in the final, winning 3-1 in Rome.

Paisley then led the English team to another success the following year. Kenny Dalglish scored the only goal of that final as Liverpool edged past Belgian side Club Brugge at Wembley Stadium.

In 1981, Bob Paisley made it a hat-trick of European Cup successes with Alan Kennedy scoring in a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in Paris. Paisley’s replacement, Joe Fagan, won Liverpool’s fourth European Cup, doing so in his first season in charge.

That win came against Lazio’s big city rivals, AS Roma, and actually took place at their home stadium, the Stadio Olimpico. The game ended in a 1-1 draw before Liverpool won on penalties in a shoot-out best remembered for keeper Bruce Grobelaar’s antics.

Liverpool qualified for yet another European Cup Final in 1985, the club’s fifth in eight years, but on this occasion, they lost out to Juventus in a game that is sadly more well-remembered for the disaster that occurred at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels that night.

Liverpool and all English teams were subsequently banned from competing in Europe for five years, and they didn’t return to the UEFA Champions League until 2001/02.

Under Rafa Benitez, Liverpool won their fifth top-tier European crown when the Spaniard led the team to a famous win over AC Milan in 2004/05.

Carlo Ancelotti’s AC Milan side looked to be cruising as they went in at half-time 3-0 up, but Liverpool pulled off an incredible comeback, leveling at 3-3 before the game went to a penalty shoot-out, which the Premier League side duly won.

AC Milan got their revenge two seasons later when they defeated Liverpool in the 2007 UEFA Champions League Final in Athens.

With German boss Jurgen Klopp on board, Liverpool made a concerted impact on the UEFA Champions League, and between 2017/19 and 2021/22, they reached the final on three occasions.

In the first of these encounters, they lost out to Real Madrid, going down 3-1 thanks in part to an incredible overhead kick goal from Welsh international Gareth Bale and a woeful goalkeeping error from Liverpool keeper Loris Karius.

The following season, Klopp’s side produced an incredible recovery to beat Barcelona in the Semi-Finals to set up an all-Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi gave Liverpool a comfortable win and their sixth title.

In 2021/22, they once again faced off with Real Madrid and were narrowly beaten, with Vinicius Junior scoring the game’s only goal.
