Lazio have had little joy in the competition. During the European Cup era, they qualified on occasion after winning Serie A in 1973/74, but due to crowd trouble in their previous European campaign, they were banned from competing.

Their second Italian title came 25 years later under Swedish boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, who, of course, went on to manage the England national team, which led to their first shot at the UEFA Champions League, and they made a concerted impact.

In 1999/2000, the competition was run with two group stages, and in the first, Lazio picked up four wins and two draws from their games with Bayer Leverkusen, Dynamo Kyiv, and Maribor, meaning they finished top.

In the second group stage, they managed three wins, two draws, and one defeat, including impressive displays against Chelsea home and away. That meant they once again finished top to set up a Quarter-Final clash with Valencia, where they were duly beaten 5-3 on aggregate.

So, after 14 games in their first season in the competition, Lazio struggled to get a foothold in the competition, never managing to get to the knockout phase in each of their next five attempts.

That run came to an end in 2020/21, with Simone Inzaghi’s side getting through a group stage that saw them go up against Borussia Dortmund, Zenit Saint Petersburg, and Club Brugge, unbeaten, only to then be thumped 6-2 by Bayern Munich in the Round of 16.

Paris Saint-Germain have also had their issues in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League.

Their mega-rich owners have effectively bankrolled the team in order to secure a maiden top-tier trophy in Europe, but as of 2023, they haven’t quite cracked the code, that’s despite having some stellar names to call upon, including Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

In 1986/87, they played in the European Cup for the first time and were knocked out in the First Round by Vitkovice. Their second attempt, in 1994/95, saw them go all the way to the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals before they were beaten by AC Milan.

Their renewed success in the French Ligue 1 meant that they took part in the UEFA Champions League in every season from 2012/13 to 2022/23 and never failed to secure safe passage through the group stages.

The first four seasons of that run saw exits at the Quarter-Final stage to FC Barcelona twice, as well as Chelsea and Manchester City.

In 2019/20, they made it through the UEFA Champions League Final, where they took on Bayern Munich in an empty Estadio da Luz stadium in Lisbon due to coronavirus restrictions.

They were outplayed by their German opponents on the day, with former PSG man Kingsley Coman scoring the only goal of the game. The following season saw them knocked out by Manchester City again, this time in the Semi-Finals, and the search for a first UEFA Champions League title continues.

The only notable player to have worn both the Lazio and PSG shirts over the years, including Albanian international Lorik Cana, who came through the ranks at the Parc des Princes before making 81 appearances for the French side.

He then left to join arch-rivals Marseille in 2005 before spending four seasons with Lazio between 2011 and 2015, playing 111 games for the Italian side.

Cana won domestic cups with both clubs.
