Lazio’s first involvement in the UEFA Champions League came some twenty after they had actually first qualified for the competition.

When the Rome-based side won their maiden Serie A title in 1973/74, they were, of course, due to take part in the following season’s European Cup competition. However, they were banned from competing due to crowd trouble at an earlier UEFA encounter.

When they won the title for a second time in the late 1990s, they finally got to have their UEFA top-tier bow in the 1999/2000 Champions League.

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side fought their way through two group stages, playing 12 games and beating both Chelsea and Marseille, losing just one match, to set up a Quarter-Final with Spanish team Valencia.

Unfortunately, Lazio were outclassed by the La Liga team, losing 5-3 on aggregate to the eventual finalists.

They have only made it to the knockout phase on one other occasion, in 2020/21, when they lost to Bayern Munich in the Round of 16, 6-2 over the two legs.

Newcastle United’s involvement in the competition has been even more sparse than their Italian opponents. They first qualified for the UEFA Champions League in 1997/98, and Kenny Dalglish’s side performed admirably.

Newcastle United were placed in something of a group of death, facing Dynamo Kyiv, PSV Eindhoven, and FC Barcelona, and managed to secure two wins and a draw from their six games, including a famous 3-2 victory over Barcelona, with Colombian club legend Faustino Asprilla scoring a hat-trick.

In 2002/03, the Toon Army returned to the UEFA Champions League and qualified from the first group stage after a thrilling win over Feyenoord.

They then had to take on FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Bayer Leverkusen in the second group phase, where their two wins and one draw were not enough to get them into the knockout rounds.

2003/04 saw Sir Bobby Robson’s side fail to get through the preliminary rounds, and it would take another twenty years to return to the competition.

Eddie Howe’s side secured a top-four finish in the Premier League in 2022/23 and, therefore, secured a return to the UEFA Champions League for 2023/24.

In 1992, he made a big money move to Lazio, where he was a star turn and a player that is still fondly remembered at the Stadio Olimpico. Gascoigne made 47 appearances for the club over three seasons, scoring six goals.

The playmaker then went on to move to Rangers and returned to England to line up for Middlesbrough, Everton, and Burnley as his career petered out.
