The Stadio Olimpico is without a doubt one of the most iconic football stadiums in the game, and many fans are keen to visit the location for a big European tie, even if they are not necessarily supporters of either Lazio or Borussia Dortmund.

Indeed, the chance to take in such a big clash as part of a trip to the Eternal City of Rome is one that not many would pass up.

SS Lazio fans are perhaps among the most long-suffering in Serie A. For a team of their size, you’d expect the Biancocelesti to have more than just two domestic titles to their name.

Indeed, that paltry total is even less than their local rivals, AS Roma, who have just three to their name. The likes of AC Milan, Inter, and Juventus are, of course, far more successful in terms of achievement in Italy and across Europe.

Lazio did reach the Quarter-Finals of the UEFA Champions League in their first campaign, in 1999/2000, but they have only reached the knockout stages on one other occasion since then, with that relative success coming in 2020/21 when they lost to Bayern Munich in the Round of 16.

Borussia Dortmund have fared better in the competition. The German side first took part in the tournament in 1956/57, and the following season, they reached the Quarter-Final and got as far as the Semi-Final in 1963/64.

In terms of their UEFA Champions League era form, in just their second appearance, they won the competition during Ottmar Hitzfeld’s time at the club.

Die Borussen did incredibly well to defeat Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side in the Semi-Finals to set up a final with Juventus in Bern, Switzerland.

The Serie A side were the favourites, but two first-half goals from Karl-Heinz Riedle put Juventus on the back foot. Substitute Alessandro Del Piero gave the Italian side hope when he reduced the deficit, only for Lars Ricken to score a wonderful goal to clinch a 3-1 victory.

Jurgen Klopp took Borussia Dortmund to their second UEFA Champions League Final in 2013, where they met Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich at Wembley Stadium. An Ilkay Gundogan penalty canceled out a Mario Mandzukic effort before Arjen Robben scored a late winner to crush the hearts of Dortmund fans.

Borussia Dortmund have subsequently reached the Quarter-Finals of the competition on three occasions: in 2014, losing to Real Madrid; in 2016, losing to Liverpool; and in 2017, losing to AS Monaco.

SS Lazio vs Borussia Dortmund Head-to-Head

Lazio and Borussia Dortmund have played each other in just one other campaign, and that came in the 2020/21 group stages.

Lazio won the home fixture 3-1 thanks to goals from Ciro Immobile and Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro and an own goal from Marwin Hitz.

At the Westfalenstadion, the game finished 1-1, with Immobile once again netting.

A number of players have played for both clubs, including German international forward Karl-Heinz Riedle.

Italian striker Ciro Immobile also represented both teams. In 2014, he moved from Torino to Dortmund but failed to really deliver on his obvious potential. In his first season at the club, he scored ten goals in 34 games before being loaned to Sevilla and Torino.

He was then sold to Lazio, where he proceeded to score goals for fun. Over the course of his first seven completed seasons at the Stadio Olimpico, Immobile scored 196 goals in 297 games. This record has made him comfortably the highest goalscorer of all time at Lazio, and he, as a result, is something of a club legend.
