About SS Lazio Champions League
SS Lazio History in the Champions League
Lazio don't have as much experience playing in UEFA's premier club competition compared to some of the heavyweight clubs across the continent. The Italian outfit featured regularly in the Champions League during the early-to-mid 2000s, but have since struggled to return to Europe's elite on a consistent basis.
The Biancocelesti first appeared in the UCL group stages in the 1999/00 season and advanced to the knockout rounds at the first time of asking. The Rome-based team qualified for the main draw four times more over the following decade but failed to progress beyond the group phase.
Seeing Lazio play Champions League football is a truly special memory for all involved with the club, particularly for home games held at the stunning Stadio Olimpico. This majestic venue can accommodate more than 70,000 spectators.
Lazio have been privileged to have some top-quality talent in their squad over the years. The likes of Angelo Peruzzi, Hernán Crespo, Alessandro Nesta and Juan Sebastian Veron have all featured for the Biancocelesti in the past, whilst in more recent times Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic have been at the forefront of the club's attempts to return to the top of Serie A.
SS Lazio's Top Achievements In the Champions League
With only sprinkles of experience in the Champions League, Lazio haven't necessarily left a huge impact in terms of progressing to the latter stages of this tournament.
To date, Lazio's best best finish in this competition came in the 1999/00 season in which the Italian side made its Champions League debut. The Biancocelesti topped their group in both the first and second group stages, finishing above the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea. Unfortunately, Lazio would then crash out to Valencia in the quarter-finals.
Lazio later reached the Round of 16 in 2020/21 and again in 2023/24, and were drawn against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on both occasions.
