About Fenerbahce Champions League
Fenerbahçe History in the Champions League
Fenerbahce has plenty of history competing in UEFA's premier club competition, though very rarely have the Sarı Kanaryalar (Yellow Canaries) progressed to the latter stages of the tournament. Fenerbahce featured regularly in the European Cup during the 1960s & 70s, but never managed to advance beyond the Round of 16 stage.
The Turkish club later became a frequent competitor in the UEFA Champions League in the mid-to-late 2000s, and reached the quarter-finals during the 2007/08 campaign.
After crashing out of the 2008/09 Champions League group stage, Fenerbahce would go 15 years without playing in Europe's flagship competition. During this time the team mostly competed in the UEFA Europa League.
Fenerbahçe's Top Achievements In the Champions League
Sarı Kanaryalar haven't achieved a great deal in European football, and they are still on the hunt for a first continental title.
Reaching the Champions League quarter-finals in 2008 remains the furthest Fenerbahce have advanced in this tournament. Under the management of former Brazil midfielder Zico, the Turkish side finished 2nd in their group behind Inter Milan and went on to overcome Sevilla on penalties in the last-16.
Fenerbahce ultimately crashed out to Premier League outfit Chelsea, despite picking up a 2-1 win in the first leg at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.
With 86 outings, former Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel has made the most appearances for Fenerbahce in UEFA competitions. Alex de Souza, who was a Fenerbahce player from 2004-12, scored 15 times for the Sarı Kanaryalar in UEFA competitions.
