Damien Rice Biography

Damien Rice was born in Dublin, Ireland, in December 1973 and began writing songs from a very early age. Prior to his incredibly successful solo career, he formed Juniper, a band that signed with Polygram and secured positive reviews. However, Damien Rice opted to leave the group in 1998 and moved to Italy, where with the help of his second cousin, David Arnold, he set up a mobile studio.

In 2002 he released his debut solo album, O and it secured universal acclaim and broke into the top ten on the UK Album Charts and also performed well in Europe and the United States. The album included many successful singles, including The Blower's Daughter, which would go on to feature in the hit movie Closer, and Cannonball, which secured Damien Rice his first top ten UK single.

The record won the Shortlist Music Prize and is considered a genre-defining release and one that led to Damien Rice becoming a household name. In 2004 he partnered with Christy Moore and Lisa Hannigan on two singles, with Lonely Soldier and Unplayed Piano both charting well in Ireland.

In 2006 he released his second studio album, 9, which reached number four on the UK Charts and as high as 22 on the US Billboard Album Charts. Successful singles from this album include 9 Crimes, Rootless Tree and Dogs.

It would be another eight years before Damien Rice released his next record, and My Favourite Faded Fantasy (2014) was another huge commercial success. That album was made with the help of famed producer Rick Rubin and secured glowing plaudits from critics.

These three albums are much loved by Damien Rice's loyal fanbase, and his upcoming tour is very much a chance to enjoy them in a live setting, along with any new album material he is working on.
