James Bay Biography

James Bay was born in September 1990 in Hertfordshire, England and learned to play guitar at an early age, with Eric Clapton being a particularly important early influence. He moved to Brighton to study music and played gigs in the city.

James Bay's debut EP, The Dark of the Morning, helped to get him noticed, and he was signed by Republic Records after a video of a concert was posted on YouTube, and the rest, as they say, is history. In 2015 his first album, Chaos and the Calm, was released and quickly rose to top the UK Album Charts.

The album also performed well around the world, and James Bay quickly became one of the favourite artists on the live circuit. He honed his live shows as support for a number of massive acts, including Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and The Rolling Stones. Indeed, one show with Ed Sheeran at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge was considered by many to be a huge breakthrough for Bay.

Successful singles from his first album included Let It Go and Hold Back the River, both of which were top ten hits in the UK and also performed well in the United States. In 2018, he released his second album, Electric Light, which was another commercial and critical hit.

His third album, Leap, came out in 2022 and saw James Bay play his next concert tour, and once again put on a series of triumphant shows, helping to cement his position as one of the best singer-songwriting talents around.

Though James Bay is just getting started, he has already achieved a great deal, picking up a host of accolades, including two Brit Awards, two Q Awards, an Ivor Novello Award and three Grammy Award nominations.
