Green Day Biography

Green Day were formed in 1987 when the band members were just 15 years of age. They played their first concert that year in Vallejo, California, and have not looked back since.

Original Line-Up

The band's original lineup included Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, Sean Hughes, and Raj Punjabi, but the classic line-up would end up with Green Day being a three-piece outfit with Armstong and Dirnt joined by drummer Tré Cool.

The band released two albums, which, at the time, failed to make a dent in the market, with both their debut album, 39/Smooth and Kerplunk, initially failing to chart.

Dookie

In 1994 Green Day released their third studio album, Dookie, which broke them around the world and put them on the map.

Dookie was critically acclaimed and sold incredibly well in the United States, where it went on to reach number two on the Billboard charts and sold over ten million copies in the US alone.

Singles Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise, and When I Come Around all did well and have become a staple of the band's live act.

American Idiot

A decade later, with studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning all helping to solidify the band's standing on the punk rock scene, Green Day released American Idiot, which was the group's first Billboard number one album.

The album has sold over 16 million copies worldwide and included five big hit singles: Wake Me Up When September Ends, Holiday, and Boulevard of Broken Dreams, all proving a huge success.

21st Century Breakdown

It would take another five years for the band to release their next studio album and 21st Century Breakdown proved another big success.

Revolution Radio

2016's Revolution Radio gave Green Day their third Billboard number-one album, and Billie Joe Armstrong and his bandmates have been constantly on the road performing to massive crowds ever since and remain a hugely relevant band and an amazing live act.

Green Day was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 and has sold almost 100 million records over the course of its extensive history. It is a band that regularly sells out the biggest venues across the United States and the world.

Grammy Awards

They won their first Grammy Award in 1995 and a decade later won their second, this time for Best Rock Album for American Idiot. In total, they have won four Grammy Awards.

Their 14th studio album, Saviors, includes well-received singles: The American Dream is Killing Me and Dilemma.

Green Day has been touring consistently since 1990 and steadily has grown into a stadium rock band and among the most popular acts on the festival scene.

Their 2004 and 2005 American Idiot World Tour saw Green Day play an astounding 167 shows over the period of 18 months and included a monumental concert at the Milton Keynes National Bowl, which over 130,000 attended.

Their 2021/22 Hella Mega tour saw the band play 29 massive shows in North America and Europe alongside Fall Out Boy and Weezer, including memorable nights at Dodger Stadium, Wrigley Field, and Fenway Park.

2024 sees the band undertake a big Saviors tour which is sure to be among the top events of the year and will outstrip the success of the Hella Mega tour.
