Joe Satriani Biography

Joseph Satriani was born in July 1956 in Westbury, New York, and he graduated from Carle Place High School before studying music with the aid of jazz legends like guitarist Billy Bauer and Lennie Tristano.

Joe Satriani then started to teach guitar himself, inspired to do so after the death of Jimi Hendrix, one of his early students being Steve Vai, and he has also gone on to coach and tutor the likes of Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and David Bryson (Counting Crows).

In the 1980s Joe Satriani formed the band Squares and was then asked to join the Greg Kihn Band and worked on tracks for Aussie rockers Crowded House.

His debut album, Not of this Earth, did not perform well commercially when it came out in 1986 but in 1987 Joe Satriani released his next LP, and his second studio album debuted in the US Billboard charts with Surfing with the Alien, proving a big success, selling over a million copies in the United States alone.

In 1989, Joe Satriani released Flying in a Blue Dream, which was followed by The Exremist, which became his highest-charting album to date when it came out in 1992.

Joe Satriani was part of G3, a concert tour collaboration alongside two other guitar heroes, with the other spots alongside Satriani filled by an ever-changing list of the best of the best. These have included Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Robert Fripp and Brian May.

2008 saw Joe Satriani team up with Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith to form a project, with their debut album certified gold, self-titled Chickenfoot, coming out the following year, followed by a second studio album, Chickenfoot III, in 2011.

In 2022, he had been signed up to take part in a Van Halen tribute act alongside David Lee Roth before the tragic passing of guitar god Eddie Van Halen.

The prolific recording artist released his eighteenth studio album in 2022, with The Elephants of Mars charting well across the world and cementing his position as one of the most revered performers in his genre.
