Manchester City History

Manchester City Football Club was founded in 1880, first called St. Mark's (West Gorton) before the current name was adopted in 1894.

The club celebrated its first trophy with success in the 1903/04 FA Cup, but had to wait another 30 years before adding a second title. A maiden First Division triumph followed in 1937, a couple of years before World War II broke out.

Man City didn't quite pick up where they left off before the war, managing just one more major league title and two FA Cup victories until the turn of the century.

The Citizens were mostly, but not always, a fixture in the top flight, floating in and out of divisions in the 1980s and 90s.

Manchester City & Abu Dhabi

A new era dawned in September 2008 when the Abu Dhabi United Group, led by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, acquired Manchester City FC. In the 15+ years since the takeover, Man City is almost unrecognisable from its former self. The club has adopted a new logo, built world-class facilities, not to mention added heaps of silverware to the trophy cabinet.

At the time Manchester City were far off the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, and thus weren't able to lure as many high-quality players as said clubs. There was no immediate success following the Abu Dhabi takeover, but within five years Man City had asserted itself as a genuine contender for the Premier League title.

Nonetheless, City's recruitment team put in considerable efforts and signed well-established individuals such as Yaya Touré, David Silva and Sergio Agüero. Perhaps the £6m signing of Vincent Kompany was the greatest coup of the lot.

The Belgium defender amassed 360 appearances in Man City colours and he captained the team to its first Premier League success in 2011/12, also the club's first top-flight championship for more than four decades. Kompany was a four-time Premier League-winning captain by the time he left Manchester in 2019, returning to boyhood club Anderlecht.

Also pivotal to Man City's sustained success were Silva and Aguero. The latter scored 23 Premier League goals (30 in all competitions) in the 2011/12 campaign, his first in English football, including a last-minute winner on the final day of the season to hand his team the league title after 44 years of waiting.

Pep Guardiola: Man City Maestro

In 2016, Manchester City made a statement signing not in the form of a player, but rather with the arrival of former FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola.

The Spaniard had achieved plenty titles and achievements in his previous two roles, and he was tasked with turning the tide of Manchester from red to blue.

Man City were crowned Premier League champions in Guardiola's second season at the club, picking up a record-breaking 100 points with 32 wins out of 38.

The Citizens just about defended their throne from Liverpool the following season, though the Reds came out on top in 2019/20, thereafter Guardiola's team would secure a third successive league title in 2023.

For years Guardiola had been fixated on achieving European honours with the Sky Blues, and in 2023 he fulfilled this long-held desire. Manchester City overcame Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final and also defeated local rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final to win a historic treble of silverware.

Man City would subsequently go on to win the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, taking home a total of five trophies in 2023. The following year Guardiola's side clinched a fourth consecutive Premier League triumph, but lost out to Manchester United in a repeat of the previous FA Cup final.

The 2024/25 season proved a frustrating one for Manchester City, with the all-conquering side failing to mount a Premier League title challenge and going on to lose their FA Cup Final clash with Crystal Palace. Nonetheless, UEFA Champions League football was achieved and one can expect Guardiola's side to put up more of a fight in 2025/26.

Guardiola, together with his extended backroom staff and director of football Txiki Begiristain have all been instrumental in the orchestrating of the well-oiled machine that is Manchester City Football Club.
