Deacon Blue History

Deacon Blue were formed in 1985 and named after the Steely Dan song Deacon Blues, and the original lineup of the band comprised Ricky Ross, Lorraine McIntosh, James Prime, Dougie Vipond, Ewen Vernal and Graeme Kelling.

Their debut album, Raintown, received strong reviews and performed well commercially in the UK and across Europe. That record also included a string of successful singles, Dignity and When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring) being particular fan favourites.

The band's second album, When the World Knows Your Name, took the band to the top of the UK Albums Chart and included perhaps the band's most famous song, Real Gone Kid, which was a top ten hit across Europe.

In 1990, they released a version of the Burt Bacharach classic I'll Never Fall in Love Again, which soared in the charts to become their highest-charting UK single to date. 1991's Fellow Hoodlums was another critical success, as was 1993's Whatever You Say, Say Nothing.

The band split soon after but reformed five years later and went on a number of successful tours. In August 2014, the band performed at the closing ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in front of a massive appreciative audience.

Two years later, in December 2016, the band celebrated its return to the famous Glasgow Barrowlands. The show resulted in a live album and video release and was a night to remember for those who had gathered at the iconic venue.

In 2020, Deacon Blue released their ninth studio album, and City of Love reached number four on the UK chart, which proved the veteran performers were still a very much loved group.

The following year they put out their tenth album, Riding on the Tide of Love, and once again saw commercial success. To illustrate just how highly the band is thought of in their native Scotland, it's worth noting that in 2020, the band's hit Dignity was voted as the country's greatest song following a public vote.
