Midge Ure Biography

James Ure, aka Midge Ure, was born in Cambuslang (just outside Glasgow) in October 1953. The first band he performed in was Stumble, who were formed in the late 1960s.

Rich Kids

In 1977, he worked with former Sex Pistols guitarist Glen Matlock to form Rich Kids, a group that did not last very long. Indeed, by 1978, he had formed Visage with Rusty Egan. The group's second single, Fade to Grey, became a big hit across the globe. During this time, he also worked with Thin Lizzy, and Ultravox was formed in 1979.

Ultravox

His first stint as lead singer with Ultravox ran from 1979 to 1987 and proved perhaps the most well-known period of Midge Ure's extensive career. The first album with Midge Ure on board, and the group's fourth overall, was Vienna, and it proved an astonishing success.

Vienna

The album charted well across Europe and spawned the title track, which reached number two on the UK singles chart. Further hits followed with singles All Stood Still, The Thin Wall, The Voice, Reap the Wild Wind and Hymn all doing well. Dancing With Tears in My Eyes, released in 1984, was another high point for the band.

Band Aid

In 1984 he teamed up with Bob Geldof to produce Band-Aid and co-wrote the single Do They Know It's Christmas.

In 1985, Midge Ure released his first solo album, The Gift, which reached number two in the United Kingdom and the single If I Was gave him his first UK number-one single. It also did remarkably well in Germany and across Europe, cementing his standing in the field.

His second solo album, Answers to Nothing, broke into the US Billboard charts, and he continued to tour extensively. Among his most well-known solo tracks, many of which still appear in his setlists today, are That Certain Smile, Dear God, Cold, Cold Heart, Breathe, Guns and Arrows and Call of the Wild.

In 2017, Midge Ure released his eighth studio album and Orchestrated was his biggest hit on the UK Albums chart since 1988 and was well received by critics.
