The Pretenders History

The Pretenders were formed in 1978 after Chris Hynde was linked up with Pete Farndon, James Honeyman-Scott, and Gerry Mcilduff before he was replaced by drummer Martin Chambers.

The group straddled a number of music styles, from pop rock to new wave and their enduring popularity is built largely off the songwriting talents and charisma displayed by lead singer Hynde.

The band's classic 1980s line-up consisted of Hynde, Robbie McIntosh, Malcolm Foster and Martin Chambers, but over the years, the band has seen plenty of comings and goings. The group's self-titled debut album was released in 1980, topped the UK Charts, and made it into the top ten on the US Billboard Album Charts.

The album spawned a number of hit singles, including Kid, Stop Your Sobbing, Brass in Pocket and fan favourite, Mystery Achievement. The band's third studio album, Learning to Crawl, was another big success with Back on the Chain Gang going on to become one of their signature songs. Their 1983 hit 2000 Miles became a Christmas hit, and the follow-up release, their fourth album, Get Close, was another commercial success.

Their success continued into the 1990s with hits like I'll Stand by You, confirming their ability to score big hits. That release came from their 1994 album Last of the Independents, which was another top-ten UK album.

In 2023 the band released their twelfth studio album, Relentless, which secured glowing reviews and moderate success. They continue performing to large crowds, with their shows being a great mix of classic hits and new material that very much stands up on its own merits.
