The Libertines History

The Libertines were formed in the late 1990s when Peter Doherty and Carl Barat met at Brunel University, the pair formed the band and quickly drew a loyal following, and they were swiftly signed by famed indie label Rough Trade Records. Gary Powell and John Hassall completed the band's classic lineup.

The indie rock band released their debut single in June 2002 and What a Waster broke into the UK top 40 and was followed by other hit singles, Up the Bracket and Time for Heroes, which appeared on the band's debut album Up the Bracket which was released in October 2002.

The album was a critical success and helped to build the band's exposure, and their live performances were famously raucous occasions. In 2003, the band released Don't Look Back into the Sun, and then in 2004, their second studio album, a self-titled record, went to number one in the UK and also charted well across Europe and made it onto the US Billboard Album charts.

The album is very much a legacy record and is frequently added to lists of the best albums of the era. It includes massively successful singles Can't Stand Me Now and What Became of the Likely Lads, both of which broke into the UK top ten.

Tensions within the band led to a split, but the group reformed in 2014, and they released their third studio album, Anthems for Doomed Youth, which was another big hit on the UK charts. A fourth studio album is pencilled in for March 2024, with All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade being supported by a UK tour.
