Aston Villa: The Biggest Club in Birmingham

Founded all the way back in 1874, Aston Villa are one of the biggest clubs in England and, courtesy of their 1982 European Cup win, can confidently say they have a history that includes winning the biggest trophy of all.

Four of the Villans' seven league titles were won in the 1890s. In addition, five of their seven FA Cup wins also came prior to World War One.

The next golden period for Aston Villa would not come until the early 1980s. AVFC won the First Division in 1981 and followed this up with a European Cup triumph the following year.

Played at De Kuip in Rotterdam, the 1982 European Cup final was won by Villa, 1-0 victors over Bayern Munich thanks to a solitary goal from Peter Withe. At the time, Aston Villa became just the fourth English club to win Europe's top prize.

The Villans were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992 and lasted in the top flight until succumbing to relegation to the EFL Championship in 2016.

AVFC returned to the Premier League in 2019, with Jack Grealish leading Villa up from the Championship via the play-off final and then helping cement their place in the top division. In 2021, Grealish was sold to Manchester City for a then-British record fee of £100m.

A succession of managers have splashed the cash at Villa in recent years, including Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard. The appointment of Unai Emery in November 2022 really got the pulses racing and the Spaniard guided the Villains to qualify for the UEFA Conference League.

AVFC continued going from strength-to-strength with Emery guiding the Birmingham-based club to fourth in the Premier League table at the end of 2023/2024, to secure a berth in the Champions League.

The Villa Park side thrived in Europe in 2024/25, reaching the Quarter-Finals before being beaten by the eventual winners PSG. Emery's side completed a finish that once again secured European football for 2025/26 and fans of the Midlands side have a lot to be excited about in the new season.

Aston Villa Season Ticket Prices

AVFC increased their season ticket prices ahead of the 2023/24 season and then again before the 2024/25 campaign.

This saw adult season tickets rise by more than 20% in the space of two years. The cheapest season ticket cost £531 for the 2022/23 season, £610 the following term and then £640 in 2023/24.

In line with plenty of Premier League clubs, Aston Villa put another increase on seasont tickets for 2025/2026, this time by 5%.

• Birmingham City - the Blues are the traditional enemy of Aston Villa Football Club, with less than 6 kilometres separating the two clubs, however this fixture hasn't been contested in the English top flight since 2011.
