As an inaugural member of the NBA (National Basketball Association), the Golden State Warriors have had a rich history of success in the league.

They started in that first season, back in 1949, as the Philadelphia Warriors, and in their first season, they made it to the playoffs, losing to the Syracuse Nationals, which they did again in the following season.

Beating the Pistons to Win First NBA Title

In 1955-56 they secured their first-ever NBA Championship title, beating the Fort Wayne Pistons in the NBA Finals in five games.

The team moved to California in 1962 and became the San Francisco Warriors and topped the Western Conference on two occasions before they were renamed the Golden State Warriors in 1971.

1974-75 saw the team waltz past the Washington Bullets in a one-sided NBA Finals series, 4-0.

Rise to Prominence Under Don Nelson

Between 1977 and 1986, the team failed to get back to the playoffs, but things improved under Don Nelson in the 1990s.

However, once Nelson left, the team went another decade without seeing postseason action, which he himself secured a return to when he returned to coach the team in 2006.

Cleveland Cavaliers Rivalry

Arguably the history of the Golden State Warriors hit new heights the moment Steve Kerr took over at the helm in 2014.

In Kerr's first season in charge, the team clinched the 2014-15 NBA Championship, winning the first of four successive Finals series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Stars like Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson played key roles in this period, during which the Warriors won three titles in four seasons. They made it to the NBA Finals once again, making it five successive NBA Finals appearances, where they lost to the Toronto Raptors in six games.

Two poor seasons followed before; in 2021-22, they once again made it to the Finals; on this occasion, they defeated the Boston Celtics in six games.

The Warriors are one of the most successful teams in league history, and more often than not, their action does not end in the regular season.

Arch-Rivals

Their arch-rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, have beaten the Warriors in six out of seven playoff series.
