UEFA Champions League History

The UEFA Champions League is an annual competition consisting of the top football clubs from every league in Europe.

The tournament was first introduced in 1955, initially known as the European Cup. The tournament comprised only the champions of the major European leagues, but it has expanded into the most prestigious competition in modern football, watched by millions around the world.

In 1992 it was officially renamed the UEFA Champions League, and what was previously mainly a solely knockout tournament became a longer format with group stages as well as one-off two-legged clashes.

This also had a knock-on effect on other European trophies. So the European Cup Winners' Cup became obsolete, and the UEFA Cup became the UEFA Europa League.

UEFA Champions League Format

For the last two decades or so, there were 32 teams in the group stage, which was drawn after a series of qualifying rounds. The teams were split into eight groups of four, and the two teams that finished in the top spots qualified for the Round of 16.

Those 16 teams played a series of knockout rounds leading up to the Champions League final.

From the 2024/2025 season, there is a League Phase, in place of a group stage. Eight teams qualify automatically from the league phase. With a further 16 playing off in the Knockout Play-Offs for the right to reach the Round of 16.

The tournament holds the highest rating numbers on television for annual football events not only in Europe but worldwide; the UEFA Champions League final is generally viewed by upwards of 360 million viewers.

The all-time top scorer in the tournament is Manchester United and Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo. He holds the record with 140 goals, and is followed by former Barcelona star Leo Messi with 129 goals. The record holder for most appearances in the Champions League is also Cristiano Ronaldo with 183.

Champions League Past Winners

The most decorated team in Champions League history is Real Madrid. The Spanish giants clinched this trophy for a record 15th time in 2024. Los Blancos have also appeared in the final of this prestigious competition no fewer than 18 times, at least seven more than any other club.

AC Milan are seven-time winners of UEFA's flagship competition. While Bayern Munich and Liverpool are each six-time winners of UEFA's flagship competition.

Other successful clubs include FC Barcelona and Ajax, with five and four European Cup/Champions League successes, respectively. Manchester United and Inter Milan have won this title three times apiece, while the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City have also been crowned European champions in recent years.
