The number of league meetings between Luton and Liverpool is relatively low, with the bulk of these coming in the 1980s when the Bedfordshire side were consistently batting above their station.
Not that many individuals have represented both teams, but perhaps the most notable player to have done so is forward Paul Walsh. David Pleat signed Walsh from Charlton Athletic in 1982, and in two seasons at the club, he netted 29 goals and earned himself a big-money switch to Anfield.
Joe Fagan brought Walsh to Merseyside in May 1984, and though he had to battle a number of world-class players for regular action, including, of course, a certain Ian Rush, he went on to make 112 appearances for the club, scoring 37 goals before he moved to Tottenham in February 1988.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the most well-known fixture between Luton Town and Liverpool took place in January 2006.
Rafa Benitez’s reigning UEFA Champions League holders came to Kenilworth Road for this FA Cup Third Round classic to take on the then EFL Championship side Luton, then managed by Mike Newell, who had achieved promotion from League One with the Hatters the season before, winning the title no less.
Steven Gerrard opened the scoring on 16 minutes, and many would have expected Liverpool to then ease to victory, but Luton had other ideas.
Steve Howard leveled after 31 minutes before Steve Robinson put Luton ahead, and it was with utter shock that Kevin Nicholls then netted a penalty to put the home side 3-1 up after 53 minutes.
Benitez threw on Florent Sinama Pongolle, and he pulled a goal back within five minutes, and Spanish magician Xabi Alonso then made it 3-3 with a 40-yard wonder strike. Pongolle got his second after 74 minutes to put Liverpool back in front, and then in the dying moments, Alonso scored a fifth from inside his own half, a goal that is considered one of the most famous in the Merseyside club’s history.
Liverpool went on to win the FA Cup that May, drawing 3-3 with West Ham before beating the Hammers on penalties.
They met again in the FA Cup Third Round two years later, and Luton did amazingly well to secure a home draw before they were thumped 5-0 in the replay at Anfield.
When Liverpool traveled to Luton in 1990/91, they did so as reigning domestic champions, but still, they came unstuck. Danish powerhouse Jan Molby put Ronnie Moran’s side ahead after 13 minutes, but a brace from Iain Dowie and a Kingsley Black goal gave Luton the advantage.
Their cause was not helped by the fact that Kenny Dalglish had resigned the day before the game, and Moran was in interim charge.
In October 1987, Dalglish did lead Liverpool to a victory at Luton, with Gary Gillespie scoring the only goal of the game as they picked up steam and romped to the title.
