Luton Town vs Manchester City History
One would have to go back to New Year’s Day 1898 for the first-ever meeting between these clubs. A fixture in the old Second Division, Luton Town beat Manchester City by three goals to nil.
When the teams clashed in the FA Cup of 1936, more than three-and-a-half decades had passed since their last meeting. Man City were victorious in this Fourth Round tie, and again two years later when they reconvened in the Fifth Round of the same competition.
Fast forward to 1955, Luton and Man City met again in the FA Cup. The latter were triumphant once more, on their way to reaching the final at Wembley. However, the Citizens lost to Newcastle United, who became six-time winners of the Cup.
That same year, Luton and Man City contested a top-flight fixture for the very first time. Either team won its home fixture by three goals to two.
Man City narrowly beat Luton in the Third Round of the 1969 FA Cup, before going on to conquer Leicester City in the final and capture the trophy for a fourth time.
Luton and Man City would face each other a handful of times more, before the former were relegated from the First Division in the 1991/92 campaign.
Paul Dickov is perhaps the most notable individual who has played for both these teams. The ex-Scotland forward joined Luton as a youngster, on loan from Arsenal in 1993. He later made close to 200 appearances for Man City, across two separate spells with the club.

After the Hatters were relegated from the First Division in 1992, their meetings with Man City became scarce.
The teams met in the 1998/99 season, after the Citizens had been relegated from the Premier League. They played out a 1-1 stalemate at Kenilworth Road, before Man City won by two goals to zero at Maine Road.
With Luton and Man City taking part in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, it was the first time in 32 years that both teams played in the English top flight.
