Luton Town vs Tottenham Hotspur History

The first on-field meeting between these clubs was in 1894, in the FA Cup. This tie came in the qualifying round and it ended all square, requiring a replay. Luton Town won the replay, 4-0.

The teams clashed several times more in the FA Cup qualifiers before eventually meeting in the Fourth Round Proper, in 1933. Luton beat Tottenham Hotspur by two goals to zero and progressed all the way to the last-eight, before losing to eventual champions Everton.

1937 was the year of these clubs’ maiden battle in the Football League, more than four decades after they had met for the very first time. In the old Second Division at the time, Spurs were victorious over Luton both at home and away.

In 1955, they met in a top-flight fixture for the first time. Tottenham became a dominant force in English football during the 60s, while Luton spent most of that decade and the next away from the top flight.

Both teams once again became permanent fixtures in the 1980s, with a mixed bag of results when they went head-to-head.

Prior to earning promotion to the Premier League in 2023, Luton Town had last played in the top flight in 1992. They were relegated in the final season of the old First Division, before the competition reformatted to the Premier League.

As recently as 2014 were the Hatters playing outside of the Football League, in the fifth tier of the English football pyramid.

Joe Kinnear spent the bulk of his playing career at Tottenham, making more than 250 appearances for the Lilywhites. Kinnear, a former Republic of Ireland defender, was later the manager of Luton Town for two years in the early 2000s.

USA international defender Cameron Carter-Vickers joined Luton, on loan from Spurs in 2020.

When the Hatters achieved promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 2023, they hadn't shared a pitch with Spurs for 32 years.

When the teams had last met in the 1991/92 season of the First Division, they played out a goalless draw at Kenilworth Road.

Earlier in that campaign, legendary England striker Gary Lineker scored twice as Tottenham recorded a 4-1 victory over Luton at White Hart Lane.

In October 2023, Tottenham bagged a 1-0 win at Luton, thanks to a solitary Micky van de Ven goal.
