Luton Town vs Newcastle United History
1898 was the year of the first-ever meeting between these clubs, as they clashed in the old Second Division. Four decades passed before they reconvened in 1938, though football operations soon went on pause following the outbreak of WWII.
In the 1955/56 season, Luton and Newcastle United contested a set of top-flight fixtures for the first time. Either side won its home fixture, including a 4-0 victory for the Magpies at St. James’ Park.
Their first clash in the FA Cup came in 1973, as Luton were the victors in this Fourth Round tie. The Hatters later lost to Newcastle’s rivals, Sunderland, who themselves went on to win the Cup for a second time.
Luton Town won a first major honour in 1988, in the form of the League Cup. After progressing to the final, they edged Arsenal 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at Wembley.
Luton and Newcastle were mainstays in the First Division for much of the 1980s, before both of them succumbed to relegation.
Northern Ireland left-back signed for Newcastle in 2020. He had previously been part of Luton’s youth system before joining Norwich City in 2014, aged 16.

Despite playing their football outside of England’s top division, Luton progressed to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1994, after beating Newcastle in the Fourth Round. They ultimately lost to Chelsea, the eventual runners-up to Manchester United.
Almost 25 years went by until the Hatters and the Magpies shared a pitch again, in the Third Round of the 2018 FA Cup. Newcastle won, 3-1, with Ayoze Perez and Jonjo Shelvey on the scoresheet.
