Luton Town vs Arsenal History
These clubs first met during the 1897/98 season, in the second tier of English football, then known as the Second Division. Arsenal were the winners in both fixtures, home and away.
The teams clashed in the FA Cup of 1901, as Arsenal were again victorious. Their following meeting came in 1924, again in the FA Cup, as the Gunners came out on top by four goals to one.
In 1952, Arsenal advanced to the FA Cup final, having beaten Luton in the quarter-finals. The north London outfit ultimately lost at Wembley, as Newcastle United captured the Cup for a fifth time.
The 1955/56 season saw these teams contest a top-flight fixture for the first time. The Hatters were relegated from the First Division at the start of the 1960s and they remained outside of England’s premier division for 14 years.
Luton were then a mainstay in the First Division for much of the 80s, before succumbing to relegation in 1991/92 – the last campaign before the competition reformatted to the Premier League.
Arsenal won three Premier League titles under Arsene Wenger, including the famous 2003/04 season in which the Gunners went unbeaten. In 2020, they lifted the FA Cup for a record 14th time.
• Paul Dickov is one of the most notable players who have represented both clubs involved in this fixture. The ex-Scotland forward joined Arsenal as a teen before moving to Luton, on loan, in 1993 for first-team exposure.

In 2023, when Luton were promoted from the EFL Championship to the Premier League, they had not shared a pitch with Arsenal for 32 years.
The teams met on Boxing Day 1991, at Kenilworth Road, as the home side earned a shock victory over a superior opposition. Luton claimed a 1-0 win, despite Arsenal’s team consisting of individuals such as Tony Adams, Ian Wright and David Seaman.
Earlier in the same season, the Hatters were defeated at Highbury; Alan Smith and Paul Merson were on target in a 2-0 triumph for the Gunners.
