Luton Town vs Chelsea History
The first-ever clash between these clubs came during the 1926/27 season. They met in the Third Round of the FA Cup, as Chelsea claimed a convincing 4-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
Eight years later they reconvened in the same competition. This time it was Luton who emerged victorious, winning the Third Round replay following a 1-1 draw in west London.
Following their maiden affair, almost three decades passed before Luton and Chelsea contested a league fixture. This came in the 1955/56 campaign of the First Division, as the teams played out two stalemates.
In 1962, they shared a league meeting outside of the top flight for the first time. The Hatters and the Blues played their football in the Second Division for much of the 1970s and early 80s before returning to the top division of English football.
In 1988, Luton Town won a first major honour as this historic achievement came in the form of the League Cup. They edged Arsenal, 3-2, in a thrilling final at Wembley.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have seen no shortage of silverware in recent years. The Blues won the Premier League for a fifth time in 2017, before celebrating an eighth FA Cup triumph the following year and a second UEFA Champions League title in 2021.
In recent times, Ross Barkley is undoubtedly the most well-known player to have represented both of these clubs. The former England midfielder joined Chelsea in a £15m move from Everton in 2018, before signing for Luton on a free transfer in 2023 following their promotion to the Premier League.

Since Luton’s relegation from the First Division in 1992, their meetings with Chelsea have been quite scarce.
Remarkably, the clubs met in the FA Cup semi-final in 1994, despite the Hatters being absent from the English top flight at the time.
