The 1907 FA Cup was the scene of the first-ever meeting between these teams. Following a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace, Everton won the quarter-final replay at Goodison Park by four goals to nil. Holders of the trophy at the time, Everton went on to reach the final but lost to Sheffield Wednesday.

As one of the original 12 members of the Football League, Everton are comfortably the more decorated club compared to Palace. The Toffees are nine-time winners of the old First Division and were most recently champions of England in 1987. The Merseyside club celebrated a fifth FA Cup title in 1995.
