Crystal Palace vs West Ham United History

These fellow London clubs have a history that stretches back more than 125 years. Their first on-field meeting came in the Southern League during the 1906/07 season. It wasn’t until 1921/22 that Crystal Palace and West Ham first shared a pitch in the Football League.

The teams contested their first FA Cup tie in 1914. Upton Park hosted this Second Round fixture, which the Hammers won by two goals to nil.

Palace and West Ham clashed in the 1922/23 Second Division, after which they didn’t meet again for almost 50 years. That spell finally came to an end in 1969 when the teams met in the English top flight for the very first time, more than six decades after their maiden duel.

Palace suffered back-to-back relegations, dropping down from the First Division to the Third Division in the space of 12 months from 1973-74.

After several promotions and demotions, the Eagles returned to the top flight in 1989 and remarkably finished third in the 1990-91 season. Palace subsequently became a founding member of the Premier League the following year.

When West Ham conquered the UEFA Conference League in 2023, Crystal Palace had yet to win a first major trophy.

Some well-known figures have been a part of the histories of both these clubs.

• Alan Pardew played for Crystal Palace for four years until 1991. He was later manager of the Eagles for two years and guided the team to the FA Cup final in 2016. Pardew also previously held the position as West Ham manager for three years until the end of 2006.

• Ian Wright is mostly recognised for his time with Arsenal, having amassed more than 250 appearances for the Gunners. The ex-England international had joined Arsenal from Palace, and he later signed for West Ham upon departing from Highbury in 1998.

• Victor Moses joined the Crystal Palace Academy in 2001. He was just 16 when he made his senior debut for the Eagles, before going on to represent the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool. The Nigeria winger spent the 2015/16 season at West Ham, on loan from Chelsea.

• James Tomkins left West Ham for Crystal Palace in 2016, in a deal worth £10m. Two years later, Cheikhou Kouyate moved in the same direction for a transfer fee in a similar region.

After both teams had dipped in and out of divisions, they finally contested a Premier League fixture against one another in 1994/95.

The 2011/12 campaign saw Palace and West Ham meet in the second tier of the English football pyramid for the first time in 33 years. They shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park in the EFL Championship.

The Eagles completed a league double over the Hammers in the top flight for the first time ever in 2013/14. Palace repeated this feat in 2019/20 and again in 2022/23.

In more recent years, this fixture has produced several high-scoring affairs. It ended 3-2 in favour of the visitors in 2020/21 and this was followed by an identical scoreline the following term.
