These teams first met in the 1920 Third Division, but it was not until more than 50 years later that Palace and Brighton first signified a sense of animosity towards one another. Having previously been kept apart by the league ladder, the clubs began to share a pitch more often from the mid-1970s.

Tensions peaked in the 1976/77 season which saw Palace and Brighton share a pitch five times. They were drawn together in the First Round of the FA Cup and this tie required two replays, which the Eagles eventually won at Stamford Bridge.
