These clubs first met in 1987/88, in the old Second Division (nowadays known as the EFL Championship). Manchester City were victorious by two goals to nil, both away at Dean Court and home at Maine Road.

Being in different league tiers meant that clashes between these teams were very infrequent for some years. When Bournemouth and Man City shared a pitch in the top flight for the first time ever during the 2015/16 Premier League season, it was just their seventh and eighth meetings against one another.

By the end of the 2022/23 season, the Cherries and the Citizens had yet to meet in the FA Cup. While Bournemouth have awaited a first major trophy for more than 120 years, Man City have been the pinnacle of English football in recent years.

After struggling to break into the Chelsea first-team, Nathan Aké joined Bournemouth on loan in 2016. He completed a permanent move to the Cherries the following year, for a transfer fee in the region of £20m. In 2020, a £40m deal saw the Netherlands defender put pen to paper at the Etihad Stadium.
