The first-ever meeting between these clubs came in the 1981/82 season, fairly recently relative to the history of football in England.

Bournemouth and Sheffield United initially met in the fourth tier of the Football League, before they were both promoted to the Third Division.

In 1987, just six years after their maiden clash, the teams shared a pitch in the Second Division.

1990 saw the Cherries and the Blades meet in the FA Cup for the first time. Sheffield Utd were 2-0 victors in this Third Round tie at Bramall Lane, but ultimately lost to eventual winners Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

In more recent years, there have been a few players to wear the shirts of both these clubs.

• Aaron Ramsdale joined the Sheffield United Academy aged 15 and made his first-team debut in 2017. That same year Ramsdale was signed by Bournemouth for a transfer fee in the region of £800k. Three years later he rejoined the Blades for a reported £18,5m – almost 25-times the initial fee received for the young England goalkeeper.

• David Brooks moved to Sheffield United’s under-18 team from Manchester City in 2014. The Wales winger switched to Bournemouth in 2018, in a deal worth around £11m.

• In 2019, Sheffield United acquired France youth international Lys Mousset from Bournemouth, for a club-record fee of £10m.

Bournemouth floated among the lower tiers of the Football League in the late 20th century and the early years of the 21st.

In 2011/12, these teams met for the first time after more than two decades. It came in League One, the reformatted third tier, with Sheffield United winning home and away.

The Blades were again victorious the following season, but it was Bournemouth that achieved promotion to the Championship.

Their first-ever Premier League meeting came in the Covid-stricken campaign of 2019/20. This was also the first-ever top-flight fixture contested by Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

Both fixtures between these clubs occurred before the enforcement of pandemic restrictions, with a draw at Dean Court followed by a 2-1 win for the Sheffield-based side at Bramall Lane.

They then clashed in the 2021/22 Championship season, as Bournemouth earned a 2-1 triumph over Sheffield Utd in this fixture and went on to earn promotion to the Premier League.
