AS Roma are one of the most successful football clubs to be recognised from the Italian game, with their ability to win the Coppa Italia numerous times something that has certainly added to their reputation. The I Giallorossi faithful pack into the world-famous Stadio Olimpico as a capacity crowd of 70,634 can be expected to fill the stands and provide their team with encouragement and enthusiasm, whilst there might also be an added expectation as well.
The Serie A outfit have had a number of world-class players turn out for them over the years, which makes it hardly surprising that they have been as successful as they have in the past. South American stars such as Emerson, Walter Samuel, Cafu and Gabriel Batistuta have all featured before as well as legendary Italian figures Francesco Totti and Daniele de Rossi having both played in the tournament as well.
I Giallorossi have had no problem trying to get their hands on the title and have won no fewer than nine titles. The club picked up their first win in 1963/64 and continued to add to their trophy cabinet with victories in 1968/69, 1979/80, 1980/81, 1983/84, 1985/86, 1990/91, 2006/07 and 2007/08.
Of course, since their last success, there have been a number of years that have seen the club go without, which has been rather disappointing for those associated with the club. Although, that said, gaps in between title triumphs appear to be the norm for AS Roma.
Positive memories of their Coppa Italia campaigns have been rather far and few between in recent years, however their successes are certainly what many fans continue to think about in regards to the tournament.
I Giallorossi may look back on their two most recent successes in the tournament (the 2006/07 and 2007/08 editions) as they managed to beat fierce rivals Inter Milan in back to back finals. The 2006/07 Coppa Italia final will be remembered by most as AS Roma trounched Inter Milan 6-2 in the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico before losing 2-1 in the second to hand them a 7-4 aggregate victory.
