Leicester City vs Chelsea History

Leicester City are the older of these clubs, founded some 21 years before the formation of Chelsea FC in 1905. Though it goes without saying Chelsea are by far the more successful of the two.

Only in 1964 did LCFC achieve its first major trophy, defeating Stoke City to clinch the League Cup. Chelsea would win this title the following year, beating none other than Leicester in the League Cup final. This became a second major honour for the Blues, who had earlier won the First Division in 1955.

Chelsea didn’t celebrate too much silverware in the 20th century, with just a handful of trophies added to the mantelpiece. A new era dawned following the takeover by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in 2003. During his reign which lasted the best part of two decades, Chelsea won five Premier League titles in addition to several other prestigious trophies – both domestic & continental.

Although not to such a large degree, Leicester City also received financial backing with the 2010 takeover by the Thai-based King Power International Group. Improvements & success didn’t translate as quickly as they did for Chelsea, though slowly but surely LCFC left their mark on the English game.

The Foxes did the unplausible by becoming Premier League champions in 2016, for what was only the second different major honour in the club's history. Leicester had won the League Cup in 1997 and did so again three years later, however ascending to the throne of English football remains the club's most substantial achievement.

As a result the East Midlands outfit played in the UEFA Champions League and remarkably advanced to the quarter-finals at the first attempt. More recently, Leicester claimed a maiden FA Cup title in 2021.

In the Premier League era this fixture has largely gone in favour of the visiting side, as it did in January 2004. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink opened the scoring as Chelsea recorded an emphatic 4-0 win. Following this the clubs wouldn’t contest a league meeting for 10 years as Leicester spent this time in the EFL Championship.

LCFC were 2-1 victors when Chelsea visited the King Power Stadium in December 2015, with Jamie Vardy & Riyad Mahrez on the scoresheet. The Foxes went on to wrap up the Premier League title at the end of that season. CFC would go unbeaten on each of their next six trips to Leicester.

One of the first names that come to mind has to be N'Golo Kanté. The France midfielder moved to Leicester from French side Caen in 2015, for a modest transfer fee of around £5m, and he was integral to LCFC’s historic 2015/16 campaign in which they captured the Premier League title. Kanté completed a £32m transfer to Chelsea and a year later he became a back-to-back Premier League champion.

• Dennis Wise played 445 times for Chelsea before signing for Leicester City in the summer of 2001.

• Ryan Bertrand developed in the Chelsea Academy before making more than 50 outings for the senior team. He sealed a permanent move to Southampton in 2015 and signed for Leicester in 2021, though he managed only a few appearances for the Foxes before he was released at the end of the 2022/23 season.

• Danny Drinkwater joined Leicester in 2012, aged 22, having failed to make a senior appearance for boyhood club Manchester United. Due to constant injury troubles Drinkwater was limited to just 23 games for CFC before he hung up his boots in 2023.

• Chelsea purchased Ben Chilwell in a £50m transfer from LCFC in the summer of 2020. The England left-back has since gone on to play more than 100 times for the Blues, captaining the team on several occasions.

• Wesley Fofana was the subject of a mega-money move from Leicester to Chelsea in 2022, worth a reported fee of £75m, as the French defender signed a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

• Brendan Rodgers worked as a coach at Chelsea before going on to pursue a career in management away from Stamford Bridge. He was named Leicester manager in 2019 and guided the Foxes to FA Cup glory two years later, defeating none other than Chelsea in the final at Wembley.

• Chelsea appointed Enzo Maresca as head coach in the summer of 2024, after the Italian tactician guided Leicester City to the EFL Championship title & automatic promotion to the Premier League.
