Over the course of the lengthy history of the UEFA European Championship, the way the tournament has evolved a great deal in terms of format.

Between 1960 and 1976, only four teams were involved in the final tournament, and as such, group-stage elements did not occur.

In 1980 UEFA expanded the tournament to eight teams, which meant the start of a group stage format, and between 1980 and 1992, this meant a system involving two groups of four teams, each playing the other once.

Further expansion occurred in 1996, with the finals tournament doubling in size from eight teams to 16, leading to the construction of a system involving four groups of four teams each.

An Expanded UEFA Euro Group Stage

In 2016, UEFA opted to increase the number of teams to qualify for the finals to 24, and this has remained the case until at least Euro 2024.

The 24 competitors are split into six groups of four teams each, with every team facing the other three in their group. The top two in each group secure their berth to the knockout phase, and the four best 3rd-placed teams will also join them in the Round of 16.
